The LA Riots, 25 Years Later: Day 4

The LA Riots, 25 Years Later: Day 4

PAT: NO ONE WAS HURT. RICK: 25 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK LOS ANGELES WAS HIT BY SOME OF THE WORST RIOTS IN U.S. HISTORY, THIS WEEK WE’RE LOOKING BACK AT L.A. RIOTS OF 19. 1992. A STUDY RELEASED TODAY FROM UCLA SHOWS UNEMPLOYMENT AND POVERTY HAVE GONE UP, RETAIL SALES HAVE GONE DOWN IN MANY AREAS HEAVILY DAMAGED DURING THOSE RIOTS, THERE ARE PLENTY OF PEOPLE WORKING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE, TONIGHT WE FOCUS ON W.H.O. TWO PEOPLE WHO HELP TO BRING THE CITY TOGETHER. THE MAYOR WAS SPEAKING. CALL MADE OUTSIDE, HE POINTED TO THE SOWTZ. SOUTH, FIRES TO THE EAST, FIRES, TO THE WEST FIRES. RICK: REVEREND MURRAY WAS RESIDING PASTOR OF FIRST AME PASTOR IN LOS ANGELES THAT DAY. WE PUT SPEAKERS ON THE ROOFTOP BECAUSE WE KNEW THE CHURCH WOULD BE CROWDED UP STAIRS AND DOWNSTAIRS, AND PEOPLE WOULD BE GATHERED ON THE OUTSIDE. RICK: THE CHURCH STAYED OPEN AND AVAILABLE TO KNOW HOPING TO EASE THEIR FEARS, BUT FOR ALL THEIR EFFORTS HELPING THE COMMUNITY, FIRST AME — 50,000 DOLLARS. THAT HELPED US SO MUCH. RICK: THAT WAS THE BEGINNING, MURRAY MET WITH THEN DISNEY CHAIRMAN AND CEO MICHAEL EISNER. A WEEK LATER, WE RECEIVED $1 MILLION. THAT B B RICK: THERE WERE OTHERS WHO ROLLED UP THEIR SLEEVES AND BROUGHT OUT BROOMS. EDWARD JAMES OLMOS, HE VIVIDLY RECALLS HIS REACTION TO THE RODNEY KING BEATING. WHAT I SAW THE RODNEY KING VIDEOTAPE THE FIRST TIME, A CHILL WENT THROUGH MY BODY. RICK: HIS DISAPPOINTMENT CONTINUED. WHEN THE VERDICT CAME OUT, I WAS STUNNED. I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO EXPLODE. EVERYONE KNEW. EVERYBODY. RICK: AS RIOTING BECAME MORE AND MORE VIOLENT, LONG TIME SOCIAL ACTIVIST HAD TO DO SOMETHING. I GRABBED A BROOM, AND I WENT AND I STARTED SWEEPING AT AME CHURCH, I WALKED OUT OF THEIR PARKING LOT, AND I WALKED DOWN THE STREET TO ADAMS, I STARTED SWEEPING ON ADAMS TOWARD WESTERN. RICK: AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF RIOTING AND DOZENS OF LIVES LOST, CITY STARTED ITS LONG PROCESS OF HEALING, TWO MEN REMAIN HOPEFUL SOMEONE WOULD BE LEARNED FROM CHAOS AND DESTRUCTION. WE CANNOT FACEOFF WITH EXTREME VALUES. YOU CAN’T. YOU MUST BE ABLE TO COMPROMISE, YOU MUST BE ABLE TO TALK. ON TWO OCCASIONS HERE IN LOS ANGELES, THE DREAM EXPLODED IN 1965 WITH THE WATT’S RIOT. AND AGAINST IN 1992, WE HAVE TO LEARN TO LET THE DREAM BECOME A REALITY INSTEAD OF TURNING THE DREAM INTO A NIGHTMARE. RICK: WE’LL HAVE MORE STORIES ON L.A. RIOTS TONIGHT AND TOMORROW HERE ON CBS2. THEN SATURDAY NIGHT, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A HALF YOUR SMASH, SMASH,8:30 ON OUR SISTER
