MORE DOCUMENTS AND MORE MONEY. AFTER EIGHT DAYS WE HAD TO MOVE OUT FROM CUBA. AND THE CAPTAIN SAID THEY WOULD GO TO FLORIDA. STEERING TO PORT MIAMI. HE GOT CLOSE ENOUGH FOR HERB USING HIS BINOCULARS TO SEE THE COAST. I SAW SAND HERE AND I SAW FEW TOWNS AND PALM TREES AND THEN THE WALL. ALL CARS DRIVING AND THEN WHITE HOTELS. SO CLOSE AND YET SO FAR. YES, ABSOLUTELY. PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT REFUSED TO LET THE SHIP DOCK. FEARING THEY WOULD THREATEN SECURITY. SO BACK TO EUROPE THEY SAILED. DISEMBARKING IN FRANCE. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, UNDER GERMAN OCCUPATION, HERB’S PARENTS AND SISTERS WERE TAKEN TO AUSCHWITZ. AND BY LUCK, HE AND HIS BROTHER WERE SPARED. I WAS FOR MY BROTHER. AND THEY LET ME GO. ALL MY OTHER FRIENDS, FROM THE CHILDREN HOME, THEY WERE ALL TAKEN. NO ONE CAME BACK. NEITHER DID HIS PARENTS. NOR SISTERS. YOU STILL THINK ABOUT THEM. YES. I AM SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS. . Reporter: MIAMI. HE FINALLY GOT HERE. ALMOST A DECADE AFTER HE FIRST SAW ITS SHORES. HE FOUGHT FOR HIS NEW COUNTRY IN THE KOREAN WAR AND AFTERWARDS WORKED AS AN ASSISTANT PASTRY CHEF AT THE FOUNTAIN BLEW HOTEL. HE AND HIS WIFE VERA RAISED TWO DAUGHTERS HERE IN FLORIDA. THEY HAVE THREE GRANDCHILDREN. IN HIS AVENTURA HOME, A REMINDER OF HIS PAST. WHEN YOU WERE ON THE ST. LOUIS, YOU WERE OUT THERE LOOKING THROUGH A PORT HOLE AT MIAMI. NOW, I DO THE REVERSE. Reporter: BACK AT 14th AND OCEAN. BACK TO THAT SHOT, BACK TO THE PROMISE HE MADE TO HIMSELF TO ONE DAY RETURN. I AM A NATIVE. 78 YEARS HERE. 1. Powerful! Very happy for HIS success story. I can't believe humans are stupid enough to do those unspeakable things to other humans just because they're different. Ignorant Nazis scum.

  2. It hurts to hear the US turn then down, citing national security as excuse. The poor boy lost his parents, i'm hurt.

  3. His story is dramatized in the British made movie The Voyage of the Damned. Its pretty good movie too. He is right to choose Florida. Its probably the nicest part of the United States to live in with all year warm tropical sunshine, nice beaches and most importantly – No winter 🙂
