EYEWITNESS NEWS REPORTER JULIANNE PEIXOTO IS LIVE IN OUR NEWSROOM… WITH THE NEW DEVELOPMENTS. (JP) GOOD MORNING — NATHAN CARMAN ARRIVED BACK ON DRY LAND AROUND 9:45 YESTERDAY MORNING. HE SPENT HOURS SPEAKING WITH INVESTIGATORS — AND HAD AN ATTORNEY WITH HIM. IN THEM — CARMAN SAYS HIS 31- FOOT ALUMINUM BOAT THE CHICKEN POX — BEGAN TAKING ON WATER QUICKLY. HE SAYS HE HEARD A FUNNY NOISE IN THE BOAT’S ENGINE COMPARTMENT– AND HAD TO SCRAMBLE TO GET ON THE INFLATED LIFE RAFT. CARMAN SAYS HE WHISTLED AND CALLED OUT FOR HIS MOTHER — BUT DIDN’T SEE HER. IN AN AFFIDAVIT — DETECTIVES WROTE CARMAN’S BOAT WAS IN NEED OF MECHANICAL REPAIRS. THEY SAY CARMAN HAD BEEN DOING A PORTION OF THE REPAIRS HIMSELF — WHICH COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY RENDERED HIS BOAT UNSAFE FOR OPERATION. INVESTIGATORS SAY CARMAN WAS ABLE TO SURVIVE FOR 7 DAYS ON THE LIFE RAFT — THANKS TO FOOD AND WATER HE GRABBED FROM THE BOAT BEFORE IT SANK. “I feel healthy, um I feel healthy, emotionally I’ve been through a huge amount.” “He’s lost a little weight but other than that he’s doing well.” (JP) AS WE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED — THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME TRAGEDY HAS STRUCK THE CARMAN FAMILY. TODAY — SOUTH KINGSTOWN DETECTIVES ARE GOING TO CONNECTICUT — NATHAN’S HOME STATE. THEY’RE TRYING TO DETERMINE IF A CRIME WAS COMMITTED THE DAY THE CHICKEN POX SANK. THE HARTFORD COURANT REPORTS NATHAN WAS A SUSPECT IN HIS OWN GRANDFATHER’S MURDER. IN 2013, HIS GRANDFATHER WAS FOUND SHOT TO DEATH IN HIS WINDSOR CONNECTICUT HOME. THE MURDER REMAINS UNSOLVED.
